All timber can be grouped into 4 classes of durabilty

Class 1- Withstands 50+ years exposed outside above ground.
Includes hardwoods such as Belian, Blackbutt, Tallowwood, Pelawon, Ironbark, Yellow Cedar, Merbau, Spotted Gum.

Class 2- Withstands 30 years exposed outside above ground.
Includes Jarrah, Batu, Western Red Cedar.

Class 3- Withstands 15 years exposed outside above ground.
Includes Sydney Blue Gum, Kapur, Brush Box, Rose/Flooded Gum, Taun, Kempas.

Class 4- Withstands 5-8 years exposed outside above ground.
Includes Baltic Pine, Radiata Pine, Tasmanian Oak, Oregon, Victorian Ash.


Composite decking is in a class of its own. It is made from recycled wood and plastic. It has the look and smell of wood, but the durability of plastic. It is available in a variety of colours and requires no annual maintenance. Not all composite decking boards are equal in quality, some have a hollow core and others are solid boards.

Pine Decking, while being the cheapest option available, is not well suited to the Perth climate. Our hot dry summers and mild wet winters will result in your deck weathering very fast. Pine decking can warp and pull out of the framing, and it will need continual maintenance and replacment before long with an expected life span of only 5-8 years outside exposed to the weather.
